‘Trout Wall’

The Arts Collaborative

Keith Walzak, Mary Anne Griffin, Kelly Hurford, Sandy Bielenberg, Chris Loftus

The Arts Collaborative has been actively engaging a group of local young adults—ages 12-16 years old—to participate in the creation of a three-dimensional mixed media mural to be located along the Animas River Trail in downtown Durango.  Since early April 2007, the team has organized a series of studio workshops held at the Durango Discovery Museum to design and fabricate the steel and tile mosaic Trout Wall elements.  Groups of students working with Sandy Bielenberg, Mary Anne Griffin and Keith Walzak continue to develop the tile mosaic components—comprised of a series of tile panels produced for each of the three trout sculptures for a total of 15 mosaic panels. The team is also producing a background tile wall mosaic to be located behind the three Trout structures to simulate moving water.

A second team of students from Bayfield, Ignacio and Durango—worked under the direction of Kelly Hurford to fabricate the steel Trout frames and wall elements.  The steel welding components were fabricated at the Ignacio High School Welding Club. The steel frames will be ready for installation along the Animas River project site in early June 2007.
