, Colo. – The Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College presents the “swingingest band” of all time, the Count Basie Orchestra, Thursday, March 13, 7 p.m. This “Jazz on the Hill” event is held in honor of long-time Community Concert Hall supporter Russ Serzen.

For more than seven decades, The Count Basie Orchestra has presented jazz as the “modern art” of American music. Committed to upholding and advancing founder Count Basie’s musical vision, this 19-member performance ensemble continues to receive numerous honors and recognition. The orchestra has received 17 Grammys.

“The Count Basie Orchestra is a ‘big band’ phenomenon,” said Gary Penington, Concert Hall managing director. “Their sound is unique, combining blues and swing, with a Count Basie repertoire that is original and identifiable.”

The Count Basie Orchestra is one of the most prominent jazz performing groups emerging from the Swing era. The band survived the late forties decline in big band popularity and went on to produce notable collaborations with singers such as Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald in the fifties and sixties. The band has continued to perform since the Count’s death and is currently under the leadership of trombonist Bill Hughes.

Tickets for the Count Basie Orchestra - $22 for Orchestra and Balcony, $27 for Plaza – are available on the web at www.durangoconcerts.com by calling 970.247.7657, or in person at the Ticketing Offices in Durango at 7th and Main Ave., and Bayfield, inside Bayfield Music. All sales are final.

Showtime is 7 p.m., with doors to the Concert Hall and concessions, serving beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages and snacks, opening at 6 p.m.

The Community Concert Hall is located in the growing arts complex of Fort Lewis College.  It operates through a partnership with the college, a state-supported, independent institution of higher education, as well as the city of Durango, and with financial and in-kind contributions from generous members of the community.
