DURANGO, Colo. – The 5th Annual Durango Parks and Recreation Triathlon kicks-off from the Durango Community Recreation Center Sat., Aug. 2 at 8:30 a.m. The course includes a 500-yard swim in the lap pool, 13-mile bike ride and 5K (3.1-mile) run.
With the 2008 triathlon, Durango Parks and Recreation will introduce “chip timing.” Each participant will carry a transponder that will allow faster electronic timing and provide participants with their individual times for swimming, running and biking. By incorporating sprint triathlon distances, a practical race for the beginner triathlete, as well as the seasoned veteran has been provided.
Racers may participate individually or as a team. Register in person at the Durango Community Recreation Center or online at www.active.com by Fri., Aug. 1, 12:00 noon. No race-day registrations are allowed.
Early registration ends Sun., July 27 at 6 p.m. Cost is $45 for individuals and $90 for teams. After July 27, individual registrants will pay an additional $15, while teams will be assed an additional $25.
On race day, participants must check in at the Rec Center between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. The first heat begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Aquatics Area.
All racers are required to wear a helmet during the bike ride and closed toe shoes are required for the bike ride and run. Course maps are available at the Rec Center or on-line at www.durangogov.org.
Following the race, participants and their families are invited to gather at the Rec Center Amphitheater for a barbeque and awards presentation. Cost for friends and family is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under.
