Groundbreaking Ceremony for new Durango Transit Center Aug. 18

, Colo. - The community is invited to attend the official groundbreaking ceremony for the new Durango Transit Center, Mon., Aug. 18, 2008, 10 a.m. in the City parking lot in the 700 block of Camino del Rio. 

Parking will be available (no permit required) in the southeast corner of the lot. The first 100 attendees will receive a commemorative gift.

Speakers will include Colorado State Representative Ellen Roberts, State Transportation Commissioner Steve Parker, City Council Member Michael Rendon and representatives from the local federal legislative offices. Representatives from Durango Transit will also be available with transit information, as well as information on the new center.

When completed, the 7,920-square-foot Transit Center will serve as a connecting point for Durango, the southwest region, and points beyond.  The estimated project cost is more than $6.8 million, $5.1 million of which is provided by state funding from Senate Bill 1. The new transit center is scheduled to open its doors in Summer 2009.

In celebration of the new Transit Center and the expanded service to the hospital, Mercy Regional Medical Center will be sponsoring a free ridership day on Aug. 18. Patrons will be able to ride the Loops, Trolleys and Opportunity Bus within the city limits free all day.
