DURANGO, Colo. – La Plata County is challenging its residents and employees to drive “smarter” and save energy, and take part in two nationwide competitions: the “Drive $marter Challenge” and the “Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR” campaign.

The “Drive $marter Challenge,” www.drivesmarterchallenge.org, is a fuel-efficiency campaign launched by the Wal-Mart Foundation, National Association of Counties, plus 16 diverse public and private-sector partners, to help U.S. consumers lower their gasoline costs by using less. The campaign offers effective money and gas saving tips aimed at keeping more money in drivers’ pockets and reducing the number of costly trips to the pump. By entering specific vehicle data, participants can discover exactly how much can be saved by using six easy driving and maintenance actions. Savings is calculated in dollars, gallons and CO2 emissions. Those who participate will receive a discount coupon from Exxon Mobil or AutoZone for fuel saving car products.

The “Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR” campaign at www.greencounties.org/changetheworld,is an energy efficiency campaign run through the National Association of Counties, in which counties collect pledges from county employees and residents to not only change a light in their homes to an energy efficient one, but also to take other actions to save energy. Energy-saving actions could include power managing computers, choosing ENERGY STAR appliances, or properly programming their home thermostats. Participants will receive a 10 percent discount on the new Office Depot Green Brand CFL bulbs, valid beginning August 1, 2008.

Three counties in each competition in the small, medium and large population categories will be selected as “winners.” La Plata County is considered a “small” county.

In addition to the national notoriety, winning counties of the “Drive $marter Challenge” will receive 1,000 bottles of fuel additive and winners of the “Change the World” campaign will receive 1,000 free compact fluorescent light bulbs from Office Depot.

The green competitions run through November 30, 2008.
