Durango, CO: Open Shutter Gallery announces its final opening, Thursday, Oct. 20 at 5 p.m. Long time Durango resident, Ilze Aviks to exhibit new work in the Red Room Gallery, and Durango photographer Deborah Sussex will show in the vault.

Ilze Aviks, MFA, is renowned for her thought-provoking, innovative work with fibers, stitching, printing, and collage. In her new one-of-a-kind exhibition, Noting the Effects, she states, “Layers of imagery (cyanotype and digital) on silk and linen supply the visual intermingling of old and new events with a hint of camouflage. Joining the layers together with stitching is a metaphor for the arising and receding of longing and memory.” Aviks’ tapestries and stitched cloth are internationally exhibited, and are included in numerous public and private collections. She has maintained a studio in Durango, Colorado, for over 30 years. We are so lucky to have her here!

Durango photographer and artist Deborah Sussex’s exhibition, Each Day A Landscape; Hiking The Colorado Trail, will be in the Vault Gallery. This collection of new work features the images she created while hiking the Colorado Trail.
“The Colorado Trail is one of America’s premier long distance trails which spans nearly 500 miles from Denver to Durango through diverse ecosystems. Throughout the summer journey, I photographed “Each Day A Landscape,” inspired by hand-tinted photography of the early to mid 20th century. I have always appreciated how the warmth and depth of this genre heightens the realism of the subject matter yet suspends the viewer in a dream-like state.  Of the hundreds of images, I chose 43 total, one for each day I hiked.”

Holly Roberts exhibition, Fox Dreaming continues in the main gallery until Nov. 30.

The event is free and open to the public. Aviks and Sussex will be in attendance at the opening to discuss their work.

About Deborah Sussex:

Deborah Sussex is an award winning artist and photographer. Her interest in photography began over thirty years ago when she purchased her first camera with a high school art scholarship.  At the time, she felt torn between art school and a life of traveling and working adventures.  With no regrets, she chose the latter and brought her camera with her. As a fourth generation North Dakotan, she has deep family roots and connections to the prairies and plains, which, along with all wide open spaces, are a source of inspiration.  As a young teen, her family moved to Minnesota where she fostered a love for the northwoods lake country and, through friends, was introduced to camping and backcountry adventures. For over 20 years she lived on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, where she owned and operated a photography studio and gallery. In late 2012, Sussex and her husband fulfilled a life long dream to live in the mountains and relocated to Durango. Website: deborahsussex.com
