As K-9 Jimmy retires, Durango Kennel Club gives back!!

K9 Jimmy relaxes at his retirement celebration

K9 Jimmy was honored by citizens of La Plata County at the Fairgrounds August 29th night upon his retirement from service as a K9 Cop.  Along with his handler, Matt Webb, Jimmy received commemorative plaques from the department as well as from the members of the Durango Kennel Club.

Durango Kennel Club President, Barbara Schwartz, awards a commemorative plaque to Jimmy’s partner, Matt Webb for their years of service.

The ceremony included a review of Jimmy’s contributions to the community which notably included playing a crucial role in saving the lives of 4 at risk community members and assisting in the seizure of $46,000 worth of heroin.
Recognizing that Jimmy’s retirement leaves a void in the K9 Unit, which is now down to two canines, Ozzy and Astra, the Durango Kennel club donated $5,000 toward the purchase of a new dog.  Additionally AKC ReUnite, an affiliate of the American Kennel Club, donated matching funds ($5,000) through their Canine Support and Relief Fund.

Durango Kennel Club members Melissa Renick and Don Schwartz present checks to Deputy Matt Webb. Sheriff Sean Smith looks on.

The department anticipates having a new Police Dog around the first of the year.
K9 Jimmy was sold to Matt for $1, guaranteeing Jimmy a great home for the rest of his life.

The Lloyd’s, owners of Creature Comfort, donated a bagful of treats and snacks for Jimmy.
