Christmas time is here! Durango is full of festive holiday events to spread good cheer and ring in the season. We hope you get a chance to enjoy some of our local celebrations and events.

A seasonal favorite, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad again offers the Polar Express. This family favorite event includes the reading of the story of the Polar Express, as well as hot chocolate and a treat. Santa visits each car on the way to the “North Pole” and the group sings Christmas carols on the way back. It is a family event not to miss. Take a look at the website for details: https://www.durangotrain.com/events/polar-express-train-ride/

Also this year, the train offers a Christmas Tree train on the Cascade Canyon Train, where riders actually cut a tree down in the San Juan Forest. Tree permits will be sold on board, and volunteers with San Juan Mountain Association and Firewise of Southwest Colorado will provide assistance in selecting trees to cut. This actually helps the forest, as cutting some of these trees reduces wildfire danger along the railroad corridor. Handsaws will be provided. This sounds like the perfect Colorado winter outing! Mesa Verde hosts a holiday get together on Thursday, December 10. An evening full of holiday entertainment and refreshments will commence. This will occur in the headquarters area near Spruce Tree House and the Chapin Mesa Archaeological Museum. Most notably, Cliff Palace and Spruce Tree House will be lit with lantern lights—undoubtedly this will be a spectacular sight! The Nutcracker will once again be at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis this year! The State Street Ballet of Santa Barbara will perform the show, and a live orchestra will also be featured, as the San Juan Symphony will perform. This holiday classic is the perfect show to celebrate the season. Take a look at the link for times and info: https://www.durangoconcerts.com/

Durango is filled with other holiday events, as well. These options include a Celtic Christmas celebration, Christmas at Vallecito, a Cowboy Christmas Ball, Festival of Trees, Holiday Farmer’s Market, and more. Take a look at the local Durango events page for more information: http://www.durango.org/events/ . What a fun time of year to live in this quintessential mountain town! We hope you enjoy celebrating this season with some of these special events.
