Holiday Train Events

It’s one of the most special times of year around Durango. Christmas events stack the calendar and holiday decorations are around town. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad offers a couple unique events and ways to celebrate the season.

The Polar Express is now operating. This magical evening allows passengers to experience the delight of the Polar Express Story. Each train car reads the story and drinks hot chocolate on the way to the North Pole to pick up Santa. On the return trip, Santa visits each car and carols are sung on the way back. Now there is even an option to purchase the book and pajamas for your trip! This is such a special event for the whole family.

Also, the Christmas Tree train is the regular Cascade Canyon train, but passengers cut their own Christmas trees in the forest, and the trees are brought back on the train. This special train ride even helps the forest, as the trees are cut in an area that needs hazardous fuels reduction (as identified by the San Juan National Forest). By cutting the trees, passengers help reduce wildfire danger! A tree permit is required, and they can be reserved when tickets are purchased. The D&SNGRR will provide saws to cut the trees. This is a truly unique benefit of living in a mountain town, and it’s a fantastic way to start your holiday decorating!

We love the winter events in Durango, and the holiday celebrations available at the train. Take a look at the train’s website for dates, times, and other pertinent details for the train rides: http://www.durangotrain.com/
