The La Plata County Fair

It’s time for one of our favorite local events: The La Plata County Fair! Starting this week (August 7-11), this year celebrates 71 years of the La Plata County Fair, which features some of the county’s best animals, talent, and produce.

There are several categories for competitions, including: baking, canned foods, homemade wine, knitting, crocheting, quilts, photography, and more. One of the fun aspects of the La Plata County Fair is the Open Class Handicrafts Children’s Corner, which encourages children from age 4 on to submit entries. Categories are vast, but some of the highlights include: beadwork, braiding, ceramics, holiday decorations, toys, Legos, and woodwork.

The Fair also emphasizes crop production and livestock competitions, and is a fantastic way for families to showcase the work they’ve done year round. In addition to the demonstrations, the weekend offers various fun events. Friday evening, there will be a Talent Contest, with age-based categories. Saturday features the Demolition Derby, and Saturday evening is the Fair Family Dance on the Patio with music by the High Rollers.

The La Plata County Fair is a great way to understand and appreciate the agricultural backbone of our community. Take a look at the pdf below for more details, and enjoy your time this weekend!
