Have You Been to Silverton?

Silverton

If you’re looking for a fun summer outing, have you thought about a trip to Silverton? There are so many ways to enjoy the little town, and it makes for the perfect day trip, overnight trip to a hotel, camping trip, or stop along a longer road trip. At just over 9,000 feet above sea level, its mountain location is gorgeous. There’s a rich mining history, and the San Juan County Historical Society offers a plethora of information, including a Mining Museum and Jail. The Old Hundred Gold Mine tour takes visitors 1/3 of a mile into the Galena Mountain to see a real gold vein. Visitors can even pan for gold, silver, and copper with a purchased tour ticket.

There are many unique restaurants and shops in the heart of Silverton. From quaint coffee shops to places to enjoy a cold beer, Silverton offers a variety of eateries. Many visitors love to browse the local shops, enjoying meals, drinks, and treats along the way.

Jeep and ATV/OHV rentals are easily available in Silverton, and it makes a great launch point to explore the mountains. There’s nothing like a four-wheel-drive excursion into the high mountains!

Of course many people love to ride the train. The views of the river and valley and sights along the way are some of the most beautiful in the world, and only accessible via train. It’s a fantastic way to get from Durango to Silverton, as you can enjoy the trip there in a unique way.

It’s been an interesting summer around Durango. With the start of the 416 Fire earlier in the year, then the suspension of train trips to Silverton, it’s been an atypical Durango summer in some ways. However, Silverton has so much to offer, and it’s a great addition to any trip you make to Durango. Even locals often enjoy the peaceful drive over the mountain to visit our neighboring town.
