If you’re tired of the snow and ready for some outdoor activities, it’s the time of the year many from Durango adventure in the canyons of Utah. From Moab to Blanding, Bluff to Monument Valley, there’s much within a few hours’ drive from Durango to explore. This is the time of the year with beautiful days, perfect temperatures and oftentimes water flowing in the canyons.
One of the unique and fun places to explore is Grand Gulch. It’s on the eastern half of Cedar Mesa, about an hour’s drive from Blanding, and just about three hours from Durango. It is a beautiful place to hike, camp, or backpack, and there are ancestral ruins and drawings throughout the Gulch. According to research on the American Southwest website, the mesa allows free vehicle-based camping along the side tracks off paved routes, but reservations and permits are required for overnight stays in the canyons (http://www.americansouthwest.net/utah/cedar-mesa-grand-gulch/index.html). Another option would be to use Monticello or Blanding as an overnight launching point, and take a day trip from there.
The Southwest offers a rich history and diverse scenery. The sights and views in these canyons are different from our mountain landscape in Durango, but they are every bit as beautiful in a different way. We love the variety of options within a short drive from Durango, and hope you get to take advantage of the canyons before summer heat makes enjoying them more difficult to enjoy!
