Landing of the Mary Jane

Join us for the Landing of the Mary Jane new exhibit reception at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum Jan 9, 2019 from 7PM-8:30PM

The Mary Jane is a 1937 Century Sea Maid runabout.  She’s 18 feet long, made from African Mahogany with a 4-cylinder, 62 HP Gray Phantom engine.  Purchased in 1937 by John W. and Richard W. Turner, the Mary Jane is still owned by the Turner family and has only been launched on Electra Lake (22 miles north of Durango, CO).   The Mary Jane first arrived in Durango by railroad and is returning to the DSNGRR Museum to go on exhibit for everyone to enjoy.

The Turners are a 6-generation pioneer family of Durango, CO.  John W. Turner was a member of the Baker Exploration Party that arrived in the Animas Valley in 1860.  The territory did not open for settlement until 1868 when he returned and homesteaded 160 acres a few miles north of present-day Durango.
