Reading in Durango, Co

Maria's Bookshop in Durango, Co, locally owned bookstores in Durango, Co, reading in Southwest Co

As a mountain town, Durango often focuses on outdoor activities of all kinds, but many don’t realize the amount of locally-owned businesses that reside in town. Until recently, I was under the impression that Maria’s Bookshop was the only bookstore in Durango. Bi-weekly I’d wander the sleek and orderly shelves at Maria’s – always curious to find something of a new genre. The air here feels different. It’s disconnected from what’s outside the doors and onto the familiar main street of Durango, and connected to something deeper within myself.

Yess, The Book Hutch, on the contrary, is topsy-turvy and will certainly disclose a personality as you step through the door. It demands a sense of introspection. Initially, you may hesitate. But as you wind through house-turned-bookstore and past the ceiling-high stacks of cookbooks, novels, dictionaries, chapter books, and all of the above, you’ll become fond of the character that Yess, The Book Hutch has to offer

White Rabbit Books & Curiosities overlooks the animas river and despite it’s sheltered location, this book store offers many novelties and books. The cairns, flowers, and carefully curated bookcases full of crystals and feathers that are placed on the front stoop will certainly encourage a creative and fun reading environment. There’s even a place to play a game of chess or just enjoy a good book by the river.

Southwest Book Trader also offers a variety of used and new books to browse through if you find yourself in the center of downtown Durango. Just off of the Main Ave, Southwest Book Trader is a great place to look if you have a particularly specific book in mind.

Durango is a locally-owned town, meaning that more businesses than not are owned by Durango residents. The locally owned aspect of the many books stores here results in carefully curated items in each store. Let’s support Durango’s local bookstores.
