“Absolute tank”: CPW relocates massive black bear out of Durango

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) relocated a black bear from under a Durango resident’s deck.

CPW’s wildlife officers responded to a home on Sept. 19th on the west side of Durango after the homeowner reported a large black bear had growled and huffed at him from beneath his deck.

CPW said this male bear had been seen around Durango multiple times over the summer, getting into trash and fruit trees.

Officials described the bear as an “absolute tank” or “chonk of a black bear”, they estimated his weight to be up to 450 lbs but an official weight was not confirmed.

It took two darts to get the bear to nap while four CPW officers pulled him out from under the deck. After, they loaded the bear onto a stretcher and pulled him into a trap using a winch.”

“Officers gave the bear a health exam which included a tooth check to estimate his age, after they administered a reversal drug.

CPW released the bear into a natural habitat far away from the Durango neighborhoods.
