Popular front man for Great Big Sea bring his So Let’s Go Tour 2015 to Durango
DURANGO, Colo. – One of North America’s most treasured musicians and storytellers Alan Doyle, brings his So Let’s Go Tour 2015 to the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, Thursday, Feb. 26, 2015, 7 p.m.
Perhaps best known as the lead singer for Newfoundland’s beloved band, Great Big Sea, Doyle is actor, producer, and newly-minted best-selling author (Where I Belong), and is touring in support of his second solo album, So Let’s Go.
Known as a consummate entertainer, Doyle has noted, “I want people to have the greatest night of their life when the house lights go down.”
Hailing from the small fishing village Petty Harbour, Newfoundland, Canada, Doyle had a desire to make his place in the world from a young age. Although he was inclined to be the leader in anything he did, there was no place for a singer or guitar player in the school band, so he learned drums. Like many Canadian boys, hockey was his other passion, and only the dangerous role of the goalie appealed to him.
Just a teenager when he left home and moved to Newfoundland’s capitol, St. John’s, Doyle pursued a BA in English and Religious Studies at Memorial University and honed his musical skills as a solo artist in dozens of pub matinees. It was in the city’s infamous dockside music pubs that he developed the thick skin and iron larynx needed to go with his natural talent.
In 1993, he joined forces with fellow musicians Sean McCann and Bob Hallett, and together they started the popular band, Great Big Sea. Now 20-plus years later, they’re still fusing Newfoundland traditional music with their own pop sensibilities.
In his spare time, Doyle is much in demand as a producer, arranger and general musical catalyst, having produced albums for actor Russell Crowe and JUNO Award winners The Irish Descendants, among others – plus furnished soundtracks for the movie Young Triffie’s Been Made Away With, the television series “Hatching, Matching & Dispatching,” and an episode of “Law and Order: Criminal Intent.” In 2012, Doyle joined his friend Russell Crowe onscreen, utilizing his acting skills in the role of troubadour and archer Allan A’Dayle in the Universal blockbuster Robin Hood.
Doyle launched his solo music career in 2012 with the album Boy On Bridge followed in 2015 by So Let’s Go. The title track is a rousing rallying cry that demonstrates Doyle’s ethos: we’re lucky to be here so let’s make the most of it.
