California Guitar Trio comes to the Community Concert Hall Apr. 16

Featuring a whirlwind of instrumental styles, CGT offers stunning virtuosity

Durango, CO – Called “world’s best acoustic band” by Guitar Shop Magazine, the California Guitar Trio brings dynamic guitar music to the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, Wednesday, Apr. 16, 2014, 7:30 p.m.

According to Acoustic Musician magazine, “A California Guitar Trio performance is like a night at the theater: Drama, passion, humor, joy, pathos. It’s all there.”

With a whirlwind of instrumental styles fusing classical, rock, blues, jazz, world music, and progressive, as well as the quintessential California “surf” music, the California Guitar Trio offers stunning virtuosity and a sly sense of humor that has earned the trio an enthusiastic following and wide notoriety that spans a variety of musical scenes.
The trio – Paul Richards of Salt Lake City, Utah; Bert Lams of Brussels, Belgium; and Hideyo Moriya of Tokyo – first met in 1987 in England at a Robert Fripp Guitar Craft course. After completing several of these intensive courses, the three toured worldwide with Fripp’s League of Crafty Guitarists. Wanting to continue working together after the League had run its course, Richards, Lams and Moriya met up in Los Angeles in 1991 and formed the California Guitar Trio, honing their intricate original compositions, surf covers and classical re-workings.

Since this inception, the Trio has released 14 CDs and most notably has been featured on the television coverage of the 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2004 Olympics. Plus, the California Guitar Trio’s music has been sent into outer space as “wake-up” music for the crew aboard NASA’s Space Shuttle Endeavor.

The Trio’s most recent album, Masterworks, focuses exclusively on the musicians’ classical side, featuring works by composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Arvo Pärt, Shubert, and Vivaldi.
