Call to Artists
Durango, CO: The City of Durango announced a Call to Artists this week for an original three-dimensional artwork to be installed in the roundabout at the intersection of Florida Road and Riverview Drive. The installation is to commemorate the legacy of cycling in Durango, as well as the selection as the overall start city for the 2012 USA Pro Challenge. Artwork of a cycling or kinetic theme is sought, and the final selection will become part of the City’s permanent art collection. This call is open to all artists who reside in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Nevada.
The project is being overseen by the Durango Public Art Commission. Upon review of all submitted proposals by the Artwork Selection Panel, three finalists will each be awarded a $500 stipend to present their concepts and qualifications during a public open house and a private interview with the Artwork Selection Panel. The final selected artist will have a budget of $20,000 for design, execution, transportation, and installation of the piece.
The Bank of Colorado has generously agreed to sponsor the sculpture and installation of a base. “We are so grateful to the Bank of Colorado for their sponsorship of this piece,” commented Carol Martin, Chair of the City’s Public Art Commission. “Thanks to their vision, the community will get to enjoy a great piece of public art for years to come.”
John Dowling, President of the Bank of Colorado said “The Bank of Colorado is proud to be working with the Local Organizing Committee of the USA Pro Challenge and we are committed to continuing our support of the arts and recreation in Durango.”
The piece will be installed prior to the start of the USA Pro Challenge on August 20, 2012.
