Community Concert Hall welcomes the Kenya Safari Acrobats, Aug. 27
Show billed as a unique cultural experience and one for the entire family
Called a “spellbinding crowd-pleaser,” the Kenya Safari Acrobats will take the stage at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, 7:30 p.m.
Combining artistry with humor and playfulness, the Kenya Safari Acrobats is an awe-inspiring and dynamic dance troupe that takes acrobatics to exhilarating extremes. The all-ages show is said to be a non-stop ride of gravity-defying human pyramids, balancing, tumbling, limbo dancing, hurling through hoops and breathtaking contortions, all to a joyful Benga beat.
The Kenya Safari Acrobats was established more than a decade ago by Jacob and Karen Kalama, who today, along with their daughter Krystina, travel throughout the United States with the troupe of six to eight highly-trained athletes. The Kalamas are originally from Kenya, and the impetus for the troupe came from Jacob’s early training with international circuses, as well as the couple’s experience with a festival of cultures where they presented the customs of their Kenya homeland. As a result, the Kenya Safari Acrobats is a unique mix of education and entertainment. “We teach the audience some Swahili (the national language of Kenya) during the shows as well,” noted Karen Kalama in a news release.
Though the Kalamas now have a home base in North Carolina, November through February is spent at the facility they have established in Mombassa to train performers and prepare them for the road. Jacob choreographs new shows each year – and designs the costumes, which are also produced in Africa.
Tickets for the Kenya Safari Acrobats ($25) are available on-line at www.durangoconcerts.com or by calling 970.247.7657, or at the Ticket Office in Downtown Durango at 7th St. and Main Ave. All sales final.

The Community Concert Hall is a not-for-profit, multi-use performance venue located on the campus of Fort Lewis College. Its ability to bring a diverse spectrum of shows to Southwest Colorado is made possible through a partnership with the college, a state-supported, independent institution of higher education, and the city of Durango, as well as through financial and in-kind contributions from generous members of the community.
