Dance returns to the Community Concert Hall on Oct. 28 with the breath-taking ODC of San Francisco

Modern dance returns to the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College with ODC of San Francisco, Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010, at 7 p.m.

Of the ODC dance company it has been said, if dance were edible, a performance by ODC would be a decadent feast. Known throughout the world for its athleticism, passion and intellectual depth, ODC’s touring troupe features ten world-class dancers in a dynamic, imaginative program. The troupe will perform a Mixed Repertoire at the Community Concert Hall.

ODC’s resident choreographers, Brenda Way, KT Nelson and Kimi Okada, are lauded as three of the finest contemporary women choreographers today. Together, through the last four decades, they have created a vibrant movement vocabulary that has significantly influenced a generation of dancers and choreographers.

Way, who trained under the legendary George Balanchine and serves as ODC’s co-artistic director, founded the company in 1971 as the Oberlin Dance Collective, named after its place of origin, Oberlin College in Ohio. By 1976, she had firmly established ODC in San Francisco, bucking the dance world theory that to be successful a company must call New York its home.

ODC today performs for more than 50,000 people annually, and, through its various programs, strives to inspire audiences, cultivate artists, engage community and foster diversity and inclusion through dance performance, training and mentorship.

Wrote San Francisco Weekly, “ODC’s modern dance repertoire is athletic, passionate, quirky and unpredictable… Not only do troupe members make it look effortless, as all good dancers should, but they also make it look fun.”

Recognized for its entrepreneurial savvy, ODC was the first modern dance company in the U.S. to build its own resident facility, from which it operates the ODC School, the ODC Theater and the ODC Gallery. ODC’s programs have launched numerous careers and introduced an extensive roster of esteemed national and international artists.
