Durango Artists Show “Previously Entitled” Debuts on Feb. 24
Tim Kapustka fits the stereotype of your typical artist – one who wakes up at 2:00 am while camping in Telluride -with a brilliant idea for a different kind of gallery exhibit.
Coming up with the idea was just the first step. “I bounced it off the creative people here that I’m surrounded by, artists who will play with me in this little sandbox we’ve created here. They said great, let’s do it.”
The original concept took form and will be presented for public debut on Friday, February 24 from 5 -9pm at Studio &, 1027 Main Ave, Durango.
Kapustka’s idea is to turn the whole creative process upside down. “Usually artists create a piece and then name it at the end, like putting on a hat. We’re going to totally flip the process. We came up with the titles first.”
The project began with a group of 21 artists, called Titlers. These Titlers were asked to come up with a title for a piece of artwork. They are all over the country and were given no guidelines, other than to come up with a title. Kapustka chose the Titlers from a group of creative people he knows who are artists, but don’t think they’re artists – people who write, play music, etc. The titles were submitted with just their name, hometown and contact information.
Twenty-one Creators were then assembled, mostly LaPlata and Montezuma county artists, “just for ease of delivery.” The Creators randomly drew pieces of paper containing the titles. They can voluntarily reach out to the Titler for specific information on the topic or not. The two can collaborate and discuss the title or the Creator can just create from their own interpretation. Voila, original pieces of art conceived based on a random title invented by a total stranger.
No parameters were given the Creators. Allocated three months time to come up with a finished piece, they will each be creating in their own medium, which include water colors, oil, metal sculpture, pastels, pen and ink, and digital art.
So what do you get when you combine 42 artists with no restraints? Come find out. The unique show “Previously Entitled” is an experiment in collaboration and process. Join the artists for the unveiling of what was born. The entire show will be up Friday night and Saturday, with an abbreviated show on exhibit for the following 10 days. Stop by Studio & at 1027 Main Ave. Friday night February 24 from 5-9 pm.
