It’s officially fall, and it’s one of the most beautiful times in and around Durango. Trees change colors and mountainsides are covered in an array of shades. We have visitors come from far away to see our beautiful scenery, and one of our favorite fall recommendations is to take a color drive before the leaves drop.
Some of the high elevation locations may be already past their peak, but below 10,000 feet elevation should still be beautiful. One of the best drives is the San Juan Skyway. It can be done in a loop, or just portions of it. From Durango, the drive goes through Mancos, Dolores, Rico, Telluride, Ridgway, Ouray, and Silverton. There are so many charming places to stop and enjoy—from scenery to restaurants to historic buildings. The Dolores River Valley has long stretches that will no doubt offer gorgeous colors.
Durango makes a great starting point, even if you choose to do only a section of the loop. You can go either direction, and still enjoy gorgeous views. Or, some people choose to take the whole weekend and stay the night in one of the old mining towns along the way. There’s nothing quite like a scenic drive, and the ability to slow down and appreciate the beautiful place we live. We hope you get a chance to enjoy this season and the area we call home!
