DURANGO, Colo. – A special tribute to the teachers who open the world of music to children will be held Monday, Feb. 9, 7 p.m., at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, as “Music in the Mountains Goes to School” presents the music faculty of Durango School District 9-R.

Music teachers scheduled to perform include Bill LaShell and Evelyn Black, Escalante Middle School; Mark Rosenberg and Tom Kyser, Durango High School; Kim Farrell and Michael Coble, Miller Middle School; Diann Wylie, Florida Mesa Elementary; Carl Ellison, Park Elementary; Andrew Saletta, Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary; and Susan Tallarico, Needham Elementary School. The evening also features special guests David Wylie and singer-songwriter Gigi Love.

“You won’t want to miss this fantastic display of our music faculty’s talent,” said Anne Beach, Music in the Mountains education and program manager, who “enjoys watching students discover and develop their music abilities through our program.”

Music in the Mountains launched its “”Goes to School”” program in 1999 specifically to enhance what organizers recognized as the unusually fine music program at Durango School District 9-R. Each year more than 5,000 elementary, middle and high school students from Durango as well as nearby Colorado communities including Bayfield, Silverton, Pagosa Springs, Ignacio, Cortez and Mancos participate in workshops and master classes taught by professional and internationally known musicians. They also attend live musical performances held throughout the year.

Tickets, $5 for adults and free to children 12 years of age and younger, are now on sale at www.musicinthemountains.com, in person at the Festival office, 1063 Main Avenue, Durango, or by calling 970.385.6820.  Tickets will also be available at the door on the night of the concert.
