Business Improvement District announces 4th of July Parade “Call for Entries”

Cash awards planned for three top entries in Independence Day Stars & Stripes Parade

Durango, CO– In preparation for a fun-filled 4th of July, the Durango Business Improvement District (BID) has announced a “Call for Entries” for the Stars & Stripes Parade held on Main Ave. in Downtown Durango. The parade starts at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, 2015.

“We want to get people thinking about their parade entry a little early,” said Tim Walsworth, executive director of the BID, which coordinates Durango’s 4th of July activities. “We’ve got $250 in cash each for the top three winning parade entries. So be patriotic, fun and creative!”

Businesses, non-profit organizations, schools, neighborhoods and more are encouraged to participate. Entry is free of charge.

Annually thousands of 4th of July revelers line Main Ave. to enjoy the parade and share in the festivities. Parade entries can be motorized, on foot, include animals and music, and more. City ordinances preclude any objects being thrown to the observing crowd.

A parade entry form, available at www.downtowndurango.org, must be submitted for review prior to an entry’s acceptance. Entries will be evaluated on patriotism, the “fun” factor and family appropriateness. Controversial themes or messages are not allowed, and Walsworth asks planners to guard against over-commercialization and excessive noise.

“The whole goal of the Stars & Stripes Parade is to bring our community together in celebration of the 4th of July,” said Walsworth. “It’s a family-friendly event and the parade entries should reflect that.”

Winning entries will be selected by an independent panel of judges following the parade.

Downtown Durango’s Annual 4th of July includes numerous individual events held throughout the day, including the Salute to America Firework show from Cemetery Hill at dusk.
