Lake Nighthorse—Durango’s New Lake

As the perfect weather in our summer days continue, it’s a great time to check Durango’s newest outdoor recreation area—Lake Nighthorse. This amazing lake is located only a couple miles outside of Durango, and the reservoir area is approximately 5,500 acres. This is such a benefit to our town, and the close proximity makes this a viable option for a variety of outdoor activities.

The Lake was constructed as a part of the Animas La Plata Project by the Bureau of Reclamation. This has been in the works for years, so it is exciting to see it open and in use this year! Some days of the week are designated as “no-wake” days, which creates the perfect setting for kayaks and SUPs. The multi-use days allow a variety of water activities, so boaters can enjoy the lake. Fishing is awesome, as well. It is stocked with Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, and Kokanee Salmon. Picnicking and swimming are other fun options at Lake Nighthorse.

It’s a beautiful setting, and we love how close it is to town! Between the Animas River and Lake Nighthorse, Durango is fortunate to have two easily-accessible areas to enjoy water sports and activities. Take a look at the city’s website for details and regulations before you head out there for the day: https://www.durangogov.org/lakenighthorse. We hope you get the chance to enjoy our summer weather and a day on the lake soon!
