Local Fourteeners

As we all find creative ways to explore and practice social distancing, we are continually grateful to live in a place that offers space and distance for adventures. One of Colorado’s unique features is our Fourteeners—Peaks above 14,000 feet. Colorado has roughly 58 of these beautiful peaks, and we live close to a few.

One of the local favorites is Handes Peak. It’s only a couple hours’ drive from Durango, and it’s easy and nontechnical if you haven’t climbed much. If you are more adept at climbing, a short drive near Telluride will get you to Mt. Wilson, Wilson peak, and El Diente. These peaks are more technical, but also relatively close to Durango.

Generally, it is advised to hike early and be down by early afternoon because of thunderstorms and lightning. Or course, you should always use caution when hiking, especially with altitude and technical details. However, we love that Durango is close to these peaks and offers the ability to hike fourteeners.

We’d love to hear from you! What unique ways have you found to enjoy the local area? We love where we live and appreciate hearing new and exciting adventures.
