DURANGO, Colo. – Maria’s Bookshop will host a signing with Rick Collignon, Tuesday, May 12, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Collignon is the author of Madewell Brown, KSUT’s “Four Corners: One Book” selection for May.
“Four Corners: One Book,” is a community-wide book club campaign launched by KSUT. The radio statison is partnering with a different local library or bookstore each month to select the books, and in the spirit of looking local first, KSUT asks participants to buy or borrow the books locally.
Rick Collignon’s writing has been called strongly reminiscent of the magic realism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and will appeal to fans of Tony Hillerman and Sherman Alexie. With Madewell Brown, the latest installment in his popular Guadalupe series, Collignon again captivates readers with a hauntingly beautiful story of parallel lives in search of the truth:
One morning, nearly 50 years ago, a tall black man with one arm longer than the other, walked into Guadalupe, New Mexico. He kept to himself for seven years, and then…disappeared. Nobody knew who he was or what became of him. Now, an old man named Ruffino Trujillo, as his last act, tells his grown son Cipriano the story of what became of the mysterious black man.
After his father’s death, Cipriano discovers an old canvas bag bearing the name of Madewell Brown. Inside, he finds a hand-carved doll, an old blanket, a photo of a Negro League baseball team and an un-mailed letter. Thinking it’s the least he can do – Cipriano mails the letter. Arriving in Cairo, Illinois, the letter comes into the hands of a young woman named Rachael Parish who believes it has come from her lost grandfather, Madewell Brown.
Drawn magically forward on Rick Collignon’s mesmerizing prose, readers follow Rachael to Guadalupe in search of her own identity, and watch as Cipriano struggles to make sense of the story his father shared – the story of a dead man who just didn’t belong there.
An emotionally honest, chillingly beautiful story that firmly establishes Rick Collignon as a master American storyteller, Madewell Brown is said to be a reader’s delight. Collignon is the author of three prior novels: The Journal of Antonio Montoya, Perdido, and A Santo in the Image of Cristóbal Garcia.
