The Met: Live in HD continues Jan. 30 with Turandot
Performance transmitted “live” to FLC campus from New York’s Metropolitan Opera
Durango, CO – The Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, in partnership with The Metropolitan Opera, will continue presentation of The Met: Live in HD Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, with Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot.
Turandot will be broadcast live in high definition from New York’s Metropolitan Opera in the Vallecito Room of the Fort Lewis College Student Union beginning at 10:55 a.m. Run time is approximately 3 hours, 15 minutes.
Nina Stemme takes on the title role of the proud princess of ancient China – whose riddles doom every suitor who seeks her hand – opposite Marco Berti as Calàf, the brave prince who sings “Nessun dorma” and wins her love. Anita Hartig is Liù, the faithful slave girl. Franco Zeffirelli’s production is conducted by Paolo Carignani.
Puccini’s final opera is an epic fairy tale set in a China of legend, loosely based on a play by 18th-century Italian dramatist Carlo Gozzi. The unenviable task of completing the opera’s final scene upon Puccini’s sudden death was left to the composer Franco Alfano. Conductor Arturo Toscanini oversaw Alfano’s contribution and led the world premiere. Turandot features an unusual score with an innovative use of chorus and orchestra, but is still recognizably Puccini, bursting with instantly appealing melody.
The “magic” of The Met: Live in HD events is that they are delivered 100 percent live via satellite. Audiences throughout the world experience the production at the same time as the audience sitting in the Metropolitan Opera itself. Additionally, between acts, the Live in HD viewers are treated to backstage interviews and other features the “in person” audiences never see.
The Live in HD series will feature five additional performances during the 2016 season:
- Feb. 13, 2016, 10:55 a.m. – The Magic Flute (Mozart)
- Mar. 5, 2016, 10:55 a.m. – Manon Lescaut (Puccini)
