Summary:

Durango Business Improvement District produces second CD of local music.

Rhythms of Durango, Volume Two, an eclectic mix of the sounds of downtown featuring 18 local artists who perform in and around the Historic Downtown, will be released Fri., Nov. 23, at a special reception held 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., at the Strater Hotel’s Diamond Belle Saloon.

The promotional CD is produced by the Durango Business Improvement District (BID) as a tool in the on-going effort to help maintain the economic viability of Downtown Durango. Four Corners Broadcasting also stepped up to support the CD, helping further the reach of the music and artists on local radio stations KIQX 101.3FM and KRSJ 100.5FM.

“The Business Improvement District exists to help all business within the Central Business District,” said Rod Barker, BID board member, and as owner of the Strater, host of the CD release reception. “Live music happens all over our Downtown. We’re delighted to be able to promote our local vocalists and musicians, as well as the venues at which they play.”

Artists featured on the CD, mastered locally at Scooter’s Place, are The Badly Bent, Lacey Black, Lisa Blue, Annie Brooks, Alison Dance, Formula 151, Tim Guidotti, Hounds of Purg, Gigi Love, Jeff Nelson Quartet, Terry Rickard, Daniel Rottenberg, Greg Ryder, Jeff Strahan, Tim Sullivan, Jason Thies, Cheryl White & Tim Birchard, and Sylvia Zurko. Those artists in town for Thanksgiving will be on hand at the Diamond Belle, with select performances scheduled.

“This CD is a little different than the first Rhythms, but it is certainly reflective of the music mix we have here locally,” said Pam Glasco, co-producer with Indiana Reed. “I like to call it a coffee house CD as it features so many singer/songwriters. It is a wonderful blend, however, that stretches from country and folk to jazz and rock and more.”

Glasco and Reed worked with Dave Mensch (singer/songwriter with Formula 151) and Scott “Scooter” Smith as music consultants on the project. The CD booklet, designed by Linda Geer, Durango Illustration & Design, includes biographies of and contact information for all participating artists. As Reed reminds, while the music is terrific, a goal of the CD is to promote the artists and Downtown.

“We want locals and visitors alike to hear this music, learn more about the artists, and say, ‘Hey, that group is playing Downtown, they’re great, let’s go see them,’ and maybe even buy their CDs or book them for a gig,” said Reed, who is also producer of the Community Concert Hall’s “Spotlight to Stardom,” the Four Corners Talent Search. “It’s very rewarding to work with local artists who often are every bit as talented as some of the superstars out there. Many of our local musicians are on their way to national acclaim. How cool will it be to say, ‘We knew them when…’ and have a collector’s item like Rhythms of Durango ?”

Rhythms of Durango will be available for sale ($15) at the CD release reception, as well as at various merchants in the Downtown, including Southwest Sound, Maria’s Bookshop, Cloudberries, Durango Coffee Company and the Community Concert Hall Ticketing Services Office. A complete listing of merchants will be available on the BID web site, www.downtowndurango.org.

“This is also something that the Durango Area Tourism Office used last year to promote Durango as a whole,” said Glasco, noting that the first Rhythms was distributed in DATO’s media kits. “Rhythms of Durango is being heard all over the world, which is great for Durango.”

Funding is generated by a 1.5 mill levy on property owners within the district, with additional marketing dollars contributed by the City of Durango and Durango Area Tourism Office.
