San Juan Symphony to Present “Friends & Family” Concert on October 2 in Durango
Durango, CO – The San Juan Symphony will kick off its 2011-12 Season of Appreciation at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College at 3 pm on October 2 with a concert brimming with gratitude entitled Friends & Family. A former member of the Durango family and Fort Lewis College Artist-in-Residence Norman Krieger returns to Durango to perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3. Also on the program are Elgar’s Enigma Variations, loving and humorous musical portraits reflecting the composer’s admiration for his close friends and family. There will also be an encore performance of the beautiful Song of the Mountain Poets by Farmington native Sam Cardon.
Music Director Arthur Post will preview the concert on Wednesday, September 28 at 6 pm at the Durango Arts Center. The pre-concert talk is free and open to the public.
A native of Los Angeles, Norman Krieger is one of the most acclaimed pianists of his generation, highly regarded as an artist of depth, sensitivity and virtuosic flair. He regularly appears with the major orchestras of North America, and has also been heard as guest soloist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Prague’s Czech National Symphony Orchestra, Turkey’s Presidential Symphony Orchestra, New Zealand’s Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and Taiwan’s National Symphony Orchestra.
Norman Krieger’s training began in Los Angeles under the tutelage of Esther Lipton. At the age of 15, he became a full scholarship student of Adele Marcus at the famed Juilliard School, from which he received both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Subsequently, he studied with Alfred Brendel and Maria Curcio in London, and was awarded an Artists Diploma from the New England Conservatory, where he worked with Russell Sherman.
