San Juan Symphony to Present “From the Old Country” on November 14-15
DURANGO, CO — The San Juan Symphony will present its second concert of the 2009-10 Once Upon a Time season on Saturday, November 14 in Telluride, CO and on Sunday, November 15 in Durango, CO. The orchestra will be joined by the splendid voices of the Durango and Telluride Choral Societies as it performs Mahler’s Forest Legend. Other pieces on the program include Liadov’s Kikimora, Op. 63 and Brahms’ Nanie, Op. 82. Soloists for the concert will include Durango’s own favorite soprano, Gemma Kavanagh, as well as tenor Christopher Bengochea and bass-baritone Steven Meredith, both repeat guests artists on the San Juan Symphony stage.
Where would the art of storytelling be without the forest? Living in Vienna at the time of Sigmund Freud, young Gustav Mahler chose a nightmarish tale and adorned it with the wildly dramatic music that would become his trademark. Forest Legend taps into the subconscious, the dark symbolic undercurrent found in so many stories, and leads us on our own brave walk through the fearful woods.
Music Director Arthur Post will give a pre-concert talk as part of the series Wednesdays at 6 – Musically Speaking at the Henry Strater Theater Durango at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, November 11. The public is invited to attend.
For tickets to the Telluride performance, scheduled for 7 pm on Nov. 14, please call the Michael D. Palm Theatre at 970-369-5669. For tickets to the Durango performance at 3 pm on Nov. 15, call the Community Concert Hall Box Office in Durango at 970-247-7657.
The San Juan Symphony is a 37-year old semi-professional regional orchestra uniting the Four Corners area by nurturing the art of music through education and high quality performances that touch the soul. It has maintained its non-profit status since 1973.
