DURANGO, Colo. – Combine lustrous sounds from the Spanish maestro of the guitar – Sir Angel Romero – with spectacular San Juan Mountain settings, and the result is the perfect start to Music in the Mountains’ 23rd Festival season.

Hailed for his superior artistry and acclaimed by audiences and critics alike as soloist and conductor, Romero will be the featured performer at a benefit event July 10 at the Moomaw Ranch in Pagosa Springs and at a gala event July 12 at the Durango Mountain Club at Purgatory Lodge. He also will be the featured soloist at the Festival Orchestra’s opening concert July 18 in the Festival Tent at Durango Mountain Resort.

Back by popular demand following rave reviews for his performances with the Festival in 2006, Romero delights audiences wherever he appears. He “thrills audiences” and “lights up works’ bewitching facets of fire, tenderness and joy,” according to recent reviews. In his Festival Orchestra appearance, he will perform Rodrigo’s Fantasia para un Gentilhombre, written for guitar and orchestra.

“In this perfect pairing of Rodrigo and Romero, we can pay homage to the rich and varied cultures of Spain,” said Guillermo Figueroa, music director and conductor for Music in the Mountains, note that other works on the orchestra program include Turina’s Danzas Fantasticas and Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini, Fantasy After Dante. “With its intense energy, this opening Festival Orchestra program will clearly launch our season devoted to ¡Pasión!

In 2000, Romero was presented with Spain’s highest honor, the Grand Cross of Isabel la Catolica, and was knighted Sir Angel Romero in recognition of his astounding musical accomplishments. In 2007, he was honored by the Recording Academy, producer of the Grammy Awards, with the Recording Academy President’s Merit Award for his significant contributions to the music world and for his professional career achievements.

The Pagosa Springs Benefit at Moomaw Ranch will include a reception followed by Romero’s performance. Tickets may be purchased by calling 970.264.1110.
