Skijoring Takes Over Silverton This Weekend

This weekend, February 16 and 17, take a day trip to Silverton for one of the most fascinating events around—Skijoring! This unique sport combines horse, human, and ski. It’s like waterskiing, but behind a horse and on snow. Its origin was to provide a way of winter transportation, but it’s now a competitive sport. Riders guide the horse and pull a skier as they traverse jumps, gates, and obstacles on Silverton’s Blair Street. There are Open, Sport, and Novice classes, and there’s also a “Fat Boy” division, for older horses, riders, and skiers.

This sport first started in Norway and Sweden. Various forms of the sport have appeared in Montana and Leadville, and in Silverton since 2010 (with a break last year). There are prizes for competitors, and Silverton will be a hub of activity over the weekend, making it a great mini-destination. It starts at noon each day, and the cost is free for spectators.

We love to support local events, and it’s especially exciting to see winter events thrive in Silverton, as it’s beneficial for the economy and fun for those of us in Durango to enjoy a change of scenery. Take a look at the website for more information: http://www.silvertonskijoring.com/
