Spencers: Theatre of Illusion comes to the Concert Hall April 26

Kevin and Cindy Spencer among the most highly-regarded magical entertainment acts

Durango, CO – The “modern-day Houdinis,” the Spencers, bring their Theatre of Illusion to the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, Thursday, April 26, for a 7:30 p.m. show. The Spencers last visited Durango in April 2005.

For more than two decades Kevin and Cindy Spencer have dazzled the world with their entertaining stage magic and breathtaking illusions. Repeatedly honored as “Performing Arts Entertainers of the Year,” the Spencers are among the most highly-regarded acts in magical entertainment and one of the most successful touring illusion shows on the road today. Recently, their peers named them “International Magicians of the Year,” placing them in the ranks of Doug Henning, David Copperfield, Penn & Teller and Criss Angel.

More than just a magic show, the Spencers: Theatre of Illusion is a powerful theatrical experience, a high-tech show that includes elaborate illusions, special effects and the emotional dynamics of good theater: comedy, drama and high tension. The illusions to be presented during the Community Concert Hall performance are selected from an extensive repertoire of magical mysteries perfected by the Spencers.

Kevin Spencer’s interest in magic dates back to his childhood. While in college he had opportunity to meet and confer with the legendary Doug Henning backstage after a show, which inspired him to perform professionally. Following a later meeting with another popular entertainer, Harry Blackstone Jr., he took the leap of faith to pursue magic as a career. In addition to performing, Kevin is the co-founder of Healing of Magic and the author of the “Hocus Focus” curriculum for special education students.

Cindy Spencer, though she harbored no dreams of performing magic, did study theater and voice in her youth. While working as a diamond consultant after college, she met Kevin, the roommate of her then-boyfriend. She began assisting with Kevin’s early shows, continuing even after she and her former boyfriend broke up. The romance eventually blossomed and the couple married in 1983. Cindy is a full partner in the magic act, and was the first women to be recognized by the International Brotherhood of Magicians.

Wrote the Dallas Morning News, “Don’t look for the stereotypical top hat and black cape of an old-time magician. The Spencers are young, attractive and hip 21st century entertainers.”

In addition to their stage show, the Spencers have created The Healing of Magic, a program using magic for occupational and physical therapy. Throughout their tours, Kevin Spencer visits hospitals and leads workshops with therapists on how to integrate magic tricks into rehabilitation. With a focus on encouraging patients to be more involved with their therapy, the program has been a tremendous success and is utilized in more than 2,000 hospitals and rehabilitation centers across 30 countries.

In addition, the couple recently expanded the program into the area of special education. Hocus Focus is a comprehensive curriculum available to teachers, which provides them with a visual, exciting and motivating way to allow students to safely explore skills levels, improve existing skills and develop new ones.

The Community Concert Hall is a not-for-profit, multi-use performance venue located on the campus of Fort Lewis College. Its ability to bring a diverse spectrum of shows to Southwest Colorado is made possible through a partnership with the college, a state-supported, independent institution of higher education, and through financial and in-kind contributions from generous members of the community.
