The 4th Annual Durango Heritage Celebration

The 4th Annual Durango Heritage Celebration

When you are looking for Durango events to keep you and the family busy, why not consider the fun and educational activities of the Durango Heritage Celebration? From Thursday, October 6th to Sunday, October 9th, the town of Durango is transformed back into the time of its incorporation, from 1881 to 1912. The Western and Victorian era is filled with a number of events and photo opportunities, so it’s important to check the schedule of events so that you don’t miss out on anything that you were looking forward to.

Everywhere you look, there will be people in full costumes from the era and you are encouraged to breakout your Victorian finest. While it isn’t required for all events, if you plan on attending the Grand Victorian ball, you will need to make sure that you are in costume. (Just in time for Halloween – you can get dual use out of your costume and come out for the biggest event of the year.) If you want to see a Wild West shootout, there will be one of
those, too.

All of the Durango events throughout the extended weekends are packed with old-fashioned fun. There will be Victorian dancing, an antique market, a trolley tour, and so much more.

Some of the events are free while others require advance tickets, including a Titanic dinner event where you can enjoy some of the finest period cuisine in all of Colorado. The Grand Victorian Ball also requires advance tickets.

Wondering why this event is so important to the community? Here’s the mission statement as stated on the official website: The mission of the Heritage Celebration is to keep Durango’s history alive through activities built around the area’s history and components of the history of other parts of the country and world.

It has four goals:

1. To educate both locals and visitors about the history of the time period of
approximately 1880 through the early part of the 20th century, which constitutes
Durango’s formative years.

2. To help support local “holders of history,” particularly the La Plata Historical Society/ Animas Museum.

3. To support local downtown businesses.

4. To provide wholesome, family-oriented entertainment for those who attend the event.

Whether you are a native of Durango and want to catch up on your town’s history or just love the Victorian era and want to immerse yourself in it, all are welcome. Find out more at http://durangoheritagecelebration.org.
