MOMIX

The Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College presents the extraordinary dance company MOMIX, Jan. 26
DURANGO, Colo. – Returning to Durango by popular demand, the versatile dance company MOMIX is set to mesmerize the audience at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010.
The internationally renowned troupe is currently touring with the “Best of MOMIX,” bringing back the most popular aspects of the company’s extensive repertoire. Though the program is subject to change, recent shows have featured excerpts from “MOMIX in Orbit,” “Opus Cactus,” “Passion,” “Lunar Sea” and more.
Recognized for presenting work of exceptional inventiveness and physical beauty, MOMIX is made up of dancer-illusionists, who for nearly 30 years – under the direction of Moses Pendleton – have been celebrated for their ability to conjure up a world of surrealistic images using props, light, shadow, humor and the human body.
“Few theater artists today can achieve the level of visual splendor and theatrical
magic that Mr. Pendleton can conjure from essentially the sparest of means,” wrote “The Wall Street Journal.”
Pendleton, originally an English major at Dartmouth College, happened to take a dance class and subsequently changed his life, forming in the early ’70s a dance company with friends named Philobolus. A decade later, he stepped out on his own to form MOMIX. Today some 35 to 40 MOMIX dancers tour the world in two different troupes, presenting the inspired choreography of Moses Pendleton.
“MOMIX, though thought of as a dance company, really defies classification,” noted Mark-Brian Gonna, MBG Productions, “By blending theatrics, physical objects, costuming, sound, with movement, they broke all barriers of what could or could not be done on a stage. This tearing down of all conventions has resonated in all the performing arts.”
And what is MOMIX? The word is the trade name for a milk supplement (Shortened from MOses MIX) that Moses Pendleton fed his calves on his farm in Vermont. It is also the name for a dance solo he performed at the 1981 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, just prior to his launch of the dance troupe.
Tickets for MOMIX – $30 for Balcony, $38 for Orchestra and $45 for Plaza – are available on line at www.durangoconcerts.com or by calling 970.247.7657 or 877.282.9992. Or visit the Ticketing Services Office in Downtown Durango at 7th and Main Ave.
