The Community Concert Hall welcomes A Leahy Family Christmas on December 9

DURANGO, Colo. – A Christmas adventure sure to charm and enthuse is promised on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, when A Leahy Family Christmas takes the stage at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.

Leahy is a Celtic Canadian powerhouse of eight siblings who are each a triple threat of fiddle-driven music, dance and vocals. The siblings – Agnes, Angus, Donnell, Doug, Erin, Frank, Maria and Siobheann – bring their all to each and every performance.

A Leahy Family Christmas is a multi-faceted experience designed to take audiences on a sensory and emotional ride through music, dance and song. Traditional Christmas classics as well as new Leahy material will be included in the show, plus the music is interspersed with Christmas stories to engage the entire audience. From sacred hymns to a variety of fiery tunes and Christmas carols, A Leahy Family Christmas covers the full spectrum of holiday music.

As Donnell Leahy noted in a news release, “Music has always been a huge part of our Christmas experience. As children, if it wasn’t for all of the lights and decorations everywhere, we knew it was Christmas because there was a musical gathering every night of the week. Our house would be alive with people, music, dance and song.”

During some numbers in A Leahy Family Christmas, Leahy will be joined onstage by their children – just as they would at a family gathering back home in Canada.

The Leahy life story reads like a Hollywood movie: a large family raised without a television on a farm in the small town of Lakefield, Ontario, Canada, where the children worked the farm by day and celebrated music and dance each evening. Indeed, their story was so compelling, it became the subject of an Oscar winning documentary: “The Leahys: Music Most of All.”  The film foretold the success that would follow.

Among the awards, Leahy has earned Junos for Best New Group, Best Country Group, and Best Instrumental Album and the 2005 Socan award for Folk/Jazz instrumentalist. The self-titled album “Leahy” rose to number four on the Billboard world music charts and found its way onto the soundtrack of the award-winning movie “The Hanging Garden.” Leahy is considered one of Canada’s most sought after exports.

Tickets for A Leahy Family Christmas – $23 Balcony, $25 for Orchestra and $37 for Plaza – are available on the web at www.durangoconcerts.com or by calling 970.247.7657 or 877.282.9992, or at the Ticket Office in Downtown Durango at 7th and Main Ave. All sales final.

Showtime is 7 p.m., with doors to the Concert Hall and concessions, serving beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages and snacks, opening at 6 p.m.

The Community Concert Hall is located in the growing arts complex of Fort Lewis College.  It operates through a partnership with the college, a state-supported, independent institution of higher education, as well as the city of Durango, and with financial and in-kind contributions from generous members of the community.
