The Met: Live in HD continues with encore showing of The Magic Flute

Performance to be transmitted to FLC campus from New York’s Metropolitan Opera Feb. 13

Durango, CO – The Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, in partnership with The Metropolitan Opera, will continue presentation of The Met: Live in HD Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016, with an encore presentation of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Magic Flute.

The Magic Flute will be broadcast in high definition from New York’s Metropolitan Opera in the Vallecito Room of the Fort Lewis College Student Union beginning at 10:55 a.m. Run time is approximately 1 hour, 52 minutes.

Mozart’s family-friendly production of The Magic Flute was the Metropolitan Opera’s first high-definition broadcast into movie theaters. Featuring a brief introduction from veteran news personality, Katie Couric, this abridged version of Tony Award-winning director Julie Taymor‘s dazzling production also features an English translation byJ.D. McClatchy. The cast includes Ying Huang as Pamina, Matthew Polenzani as Tamino, Nathan Gunn as Papageno,Erika Miklósa as the Queen of the Night, and René Pape as Sarastro. Met Music Director James Levine conducts. (Synopsis follows.)

As was noted in the New York Times, “Ms. Taymor’s fanciful sets, costumes and puppets won raves… Like most fairy tales The Magic Flute is a mysterious story of good and evil. Naturally, Ms. Taymor’s production makes the opera’s monsters quite charming, like the puppet bears who are enchanted by Tamino’s magic flute. The cast was excellent… The Papageno, Nathan Gunn, exuded charm and cavorted about the stage like an acrobat. The stupendous bass René Pape was Sarastro. A lovely, clear-voiced lyric soprano, Ying Huang, in her debut role at the Met, was an alluring Pamina. Matthew Polenzani brought his sweet tenor voice and wholesome appeal to Prince Tamino.”

The inaugural Live in HD broadcast of The Magic Flute in 2006 was seen in 98 theaters in four countries. Now, the series is seen in more than 2,000 theaters in 70 countries, and 19 million tickets have been sold around the world.
