“Clam Bake” raises $1,882 for La Plata County Search & Rescue
Steamworks event at Durango Mountain Resort generates funds with clams/beer
Durango, CO – A record number of “clams” were both sold and raised as the Steamworks Brewing Co. “Clam Bake” generated $1,882 for La Plata County Search and Rescue (LPCSAR). The Clam Bake was held Mar. 15, 2013 at Durango Mountain Resort.
“It was ‘clamtastic’,” said Brian McEachron, Steamworks co-founder, noting the funds raised were up more than $800 from 2012. “We sold more than 300 lbs. of clams that afternoon, and plenty of beer, all for the good cause of supporting La Plata County Search and Rescue. We also want to thank the crew at DMR for all their assistance. We couldn’t have done it without them.”
The Clam Bake, now an annual Steamworks tradition at DMR, features slope-side service on “the beach” outside Purgy’s for skiers and riders: a fresh, hot bowl of “steamed” clams (including corn-on-the-cob and potatoes) plus a Steamworks brew for $7. Festivities this year also included a live performance by the local, up-and-coming band “Frequency.”
“We initiated the Clam Bake eight years ago as a way to enhance the ski experience and raise funds for local non-profits,” said Kris Oyler, Steamworks co-founder. “We’ve since learned that though Search and Rescue provides a very vital service, the organization still is not all that well known, and it doesn’t receive the donations it needs. We want to help alleviate that to as great of an extent as possible.”
La Plata County Search and Rescue, a non-profit organization under the direction of the La Plata County Sheriff’s office, has provided remote rescue and emergency services in the county since 1981. Funds raised through the clam bake will help purchase much-needed equipment as well as further volunteer training for the specialized rescues that occur in the backcountry.
