Downtown Colorado, Inc. Announces 2012 Governor’s Awards for Downtown Excellence Winners
Durango Discovery Museum receives Creative Community Award
Durango, CO – Downtown Colorado, Inc. (DCI), a nonprofit membership organization committed to building better communities through educational and technical assistance, is pleased to announce the 2012 winners of the Governor’s Awards for Downtown Excellence. The winners will be honored at the 2012 Governor’s Awards Gala on September 13, 2012, which will be held during DCI’s 2012 Annual Conference in Golden.
Since 2003, the Governor’s Awards has recognized outstanding projects and people that reflect an attitude of perseverance and dedication to community revitalization in Colorado. All 2012 nominated projects were completed between September 1, 2008 and May 30, 2012.
The Durango Discovery Museum was selected as the winner of the Best Adaptive Reuse or Rehabilitation for the Creative Community Award. Governor’s Award judges cited the “really creative use in what seemed like a ‘white elephant’ building” in their evaluations of the renovated power plant in historic Downtown Durango.
The 2012 Governor’s Awards for Downtown Excellence winners are:
Best Adaptive Reuse or Rehabilitation: City Star Barn, Berthoud
Best Downtown Management Program (population under 5,000): ‘Cliffs Commercial District, Silver Cliff/Westcliffe
Best Downtown Management Program (population over 5,000): Downtown Greeley Investment Strategy, Greeley
Best Façade Program: Victor DREAM Façade Improvement Project, Victor
Best New Construction or Infill Development: Central City Streetscape Project 2011, Central City
Best Promotional Event: USA Pro Cycling Challenge (Stage 6), Golden
Best Public Space Project: Downtown Bus Shelters and Interpretive Project, Steamboat Springs
Colorful Colorado Award: Rebuilding of Gambles Store, Granby
Creative Community Award: Durango Discovery Museum, Durango
Downtowner of the Year: Gary Wink, Golden
“DCI and our selection committee were thrilled by the innovative projects submitted for the 2012 Governor’s Awards for Downtown Excellence nominations.” said Katherine Correll, executive director, Downtown Colorado, Inc. “This year’s nominations highlighted the importance of bringing partners and resources together to support downtown initiatives. With more nominations than recent years, each category was highly competitive and a lot of difficult choices had to be made. We congratulate the winners and all of the nominees for excellent work to enhance Colorado’s commercial districts.”
All Governor’s Awards winners will be featured at the Governor’s Award Gala Dinner and Reception at the American Mountaineering Center and Museum at 6:00pm. All winners will also receive a certificate signed by Governor John Hickenlooper, State of Colorado; Reeves Brown, Executive Director, Department of Local Affairs; and Anna Jones, DCI Board President.
The Governor’s Awards presentations will take place during DCI’s three-day annual conference, Design, Develop & Deliver: Partnerships for Shaping Vital Downtowns this September 12-14 in Golden. All conference registrations include tickets to the Governor’s Awards event. Individual tickets are also available for $75.
