Durango-La Plata County Airport Breaks 2008 Passenger Record

 

July was a record month for passengers at the Durango-La PlataCounty Airport with 17,206 passengers boarding commercial airlines during July, exceeding the previous record of 16,023, set in July, 2008.   Through the end of July, the airport recorded 91,027 passenger boardings so far this year, an increase of 13.2% from the same period in 2009.

 “We are encouraged with these results,” said Ron Dent, Director of Aviation.  “The large numbers show that air service demand is very strong in the Four Corners region.  The airlines have responded with low fares and increased service to meet that demand.  “

“The airport is on track to handle over 340,000 passengers this year” Dent continued.  “The rapid increase in passenger traffic is straining the existing facility, especially auto parking and the gate area.”  A terminal area master plan is currently underway to address these challenges and to plan for future expansion if the current trend continues.
