PAGOSA SPRINGS, Colo. – Incumbent Herb Brodsky and new candidate Bobby Lieb have been elected by La Plata Electric Association (LPEA) member/owners to fill director seats for Districts 4 and 3, respectively. Votes were tallied during the 2009 Annual Meeting, held Saturday, May 9, 2009 at Pagosa Springs High School.

Incumbent Brodsky was challenged by John Beebe in District 4 (north and east La Plata County). District 3 incumbent John Gardella retired from the board, leaving Lieb, Connie Imig and Harry Riegle to vie for the open seat in District 3 (Durango proper).

Pursuant to LPEA bylaws, one-third of the director’s seats are up for election annually, one in each of LPEA’s four districts. Elections were cancelled in two districts as Bob Formwalt (District 1 – Archuleta County) and Jerry McCaw (District 2 – south and west La Plata County) had no challengers.

On April 15, approximately 6,700 ballots were mailed to member/owners in District 3, and 1,449 cast votes. Lieb received 709 votes, followed by Riegle with 431 and Imig with 309. In District 4, approximately 7,200 member/owners received ballots and 1,306 cast votes. Brodsky received 801 votes and Beebe 505.

Ballots were prepared in accordance with requirements of the La Plata County Clerk, and the county’s electronic voting equipment was used by an independent tally committee to count the ballots.

“We congratulate Herb Brodsky on his re-election,” said LPEA CEO Greg Munro, noting that Brodsky has, during his tenure, been an active, involved and conscientious board member. “We also welcome Bobby Lieb to the board. We know his business background will go far to further LPEA’s fiscal integrity.”

An independent business consultant who has lived in Southwest Colorado since 1980, Herb Brodsky’s professional experience includes vice president/director of property management for Melvin Simon and Associates; sales engineer/product manager, The Carborundum Company; sales engineer, Rockwell Standard Corporation; and staff engineer, central engineering division, Chrysler Corporation.

In the non-profit arena, Brodsky is board president of the La Plata County Community Development Corporation and Fox Farm Village Owners Association, and a member of the LPEA Round-up Foundation board. Former leadership roles include president of the LPEA board of directors and board president of the Community Foundation, American Cancer Society, Durango Natural Foods and more. Originally from Chicago, he earned his BS in mechanical engineering from Purdue University, and his masters in automotive engineering from the Chrysler Institute of Engineering.

Bobby Lieb has been widely known as the executive director who handled the merger of the Durango Chamber of Commerce and La Plata Economic Development Action Partnership (LEAD), a position from which he stepped down in 2007 to head up development of the new Durango Airport Business Park.

A graduate of Arizona State University with a BS in international marketing, he was also vice president of operations for Durango Threadworks, and launched Berghaus, a clothing retail store in Newport, Rhode Island. Lieb, originally from Newport Beach, California, is a graduate of Leadership La Plata and currently sits on the Hundred Club, FastTrack Communications and Durango Youth Soccer boards of directors, the latter of which he is president.

“As a company, LPEA exists to serve its members. Everyone has an economic interest and voice in LPEA’s future,” said Munro. “We thank those who cast their votes and took time to participate in the cooperative process.”

LPEA, a Touchstone Energy Cooperative established in 1939, provides to its nearly 30,000 members with more than 40,000 meters, safe, reliable electricity at the lowest reasonable cost, while being environmentally responsible.
