The Intergalactic Nemesis

Live-action graphic novel “The Intergalactic Nemesis”
comes to the Community Concert Hall at For Lewis College Feb. 26
Durango, CO – The live-action graphic novel “The Intergalactic Nemesis” will be staged at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, 7 p.m.
Launched in the 1990s as a traditional radio play, “The Intergalactic Nemesis” morphed first into a graphic novel, and now to a live performance. A multi-media production, “The Intergalactic Nemesis” is traveling the country with three actors, a foley artist and a keyboardist, plus some 1,200 graphic novel images that are projected above the actors.
The story thus far… The year is 1933. Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Molly Sloan and her intrepid research assistant Timmy Mendez team up with Ben Wilcott, a mysterious librarian from Flagstaff, Ariz. Together, they travel from Rumania to Scotland, across Europe to North Africa, then to the Robot Planet (in the Effdillinplitzenpire Galaxy), and finally to Imperial Zygon to face the most terrible threat humanity has ever known: an invading force of outer space sludge-monsters known as the Zygonians.
“Sometimes it’s important to just have an escape… and go on a pure, unadulterated adventure,” said “The Intergalactic Nemesis” Director Jason Neulander, noting the production connects with his inner 12-year-old. A fan of the Star Wars movies and pulp science fiction from the 1930s and 1940s, Neulander had the original inspiration to blend radio plays and comics.
Foley artist Buzz Moran adds a feature unique in most live shows, creating the sound effects literally in front of the audience, coaxing new sounds from familiar old toys and household items. For example, a child’s slide whistle becomes the sound of a gas jet for an alien planet, and a whistle coupled with a box of dry macaroni makes a very convincing approaching train.
The 2012-2013 tour is taking the production throughout North America, including a week at the Kennedy Center, two weeks at the New Victory Theatre on Broadway, and 10 days in Hawaii. The show runs two hours, including intermission, and is appropriate for audiences age 7 and older.
