New Owner Steps in as Purgatory Celebrates it’s 50th!

Purgatory-Retro-LOGODurango Mountain Resort announces that James Coleman, a local Durango businessman, finalized the purchase of the resort operations (not the real estate) on February 25, 2015.  In honor of Purgatory’s 50th anniversary (resort was founded in 1965), Coleman will re-launch the popular “retro” logo with the red and white inverted triangles.  Coleman grew up skiing at Purgatory.

Coleman’s resort portfolio includes four southwest ski areas:  Purgatory, Snowbowl in AZ (to close this spring), Pajarito and Sipapu both in NM.

Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort is located in the rugged San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado, and 25 miles north of historic downtown Durango.  It is a unique blend of steep tree skiing trails and wide-open cruisers with stunning views.  Averaging 260 inches of snow annually, Purgatory is known for consistent, dry powder from frequent storms, followed by sunny, bluebird days, which creates perfect conditions for pure alpine nirvana.  Renowned as a family-friendly resort and named “Best Ski Value” by TripAdvisor 2012-2014, there are many other ways to enjoy the incredible winter wonderland at Purg.

Purgatory FEATURES:

  • 1,360 acres of skiable terrain
  • 88 trails
  • 10 lifts
  • five terrain parks
  • vertical drop of 2,029 feet
