Screening of “First Generation” to mark National TRiO Day at Fort Lewis College

Durango, CO – Fort Lewis College’s federal TRiO programs (Program for Academic Advancement, STEM3, Upward Bound and Talent Search) are hosting a screening and panel discussion of the documentary “First Generation.” “First Generation” will be screened at Fort Lewis College in the Student Union Building’s Vallecito Room, February 28th, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. in honor of National TRiO Day. The event is free and open to the public.

This 95-minute documentary explores the problem of college access faced by first generation and low-income students and how their success has major implications for the future of our nation. Shot over the course of three years, “First Generation” tells the story of four high school students who set out to break the cycle of poverty and bring hope to their families and communities by pursuing a college education.

Federal TRiO programs are outreach and student support programs. Fort Lewis College houses three TRiO programs, (including two Student Support Services programs) that serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post-baccalaureate programs.
