BID to reward local shoppers with gift cards throughout the week

Durango, CO – In support of National Random Acts of Kindness Week, Feb. 10-14, 2014, the Durango Business Improvement District (BID) and Bank of Colorado in Downtown Durango have teamed up to encourage local shopping with a Durango version of “random acts of kindness.”

Throughout the week, BID and Bank of Colorado representatives will distribute pre-paid gift cards from local merchants to 100 lucky shoppers “caught” patronizing local businesses within the Business Improvement District (which is the Central Business District and North Main). Twenty cards will be awarded each day.
“It’s our little way to thank folks for spending their dollars with our local merchants,” said Tim Walsworth, executive director of the BID, which is tasked with the mission to help sustain economic vitality in the District. “So shop local and you just might be rewarded with a ‘random act of kindness’ courtesy the BID and Bank of Colorado.”

As publicized by the Durango Chamber of Commerce’s “Look Local First” campaign, which promotes keeping dollars in La Plata County as long as possible, “Always consider buying from local merchants and stores before spending your money out of the county or online. The result: An increased revenue stream that supports efforts to improve roads, bike paths, playgrounds, and many programs that enhance our way of life.”

“The more often we choose to shop at our local businesses, the stronger and more vibrant our community will be,” confirmed Melisa Caskey, vice president, Bank of Colorado. “We’re looking forward to rewarding our community members for participating in this fun new program.”
