The 2012 Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event Scheduled for October 6th
Durango, CO – The 2012 Household Hazardous Waste Collection event will be held on Saturday, October 6th from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Avenue, Durango. The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Event provides the residents of the City of Durango, La Plata County and the region with the opportunity to responsibly dispose of hazardous and hard-to-dispose household products. In 2010, area residents dropped-off approximately 20 tons of hazardous material including, 15,400 pounds of oil-based paint, 13,500 pounds of latex paint and 3,100 pounds of pesticides.
The following items will be accepted at the event: cleaning supplies, painting supplies, indoor home supplies, garden supplies, automotive fluids, car batteries, hobby supplies, propane tanks and pharmaceuticals. A $20 donation is requested from event attendees to help defray the cost of the event. Ammunition and other explosives, radioactive waste and electronics will not be accepted at the event.
Local businesses can schedule an appointment for Friday, October 5th to dispose of commercial quantities of hazardous material. Appointments can be made by contacting Clean Harbors at 303-371-1100 Ext. 235. Commercial waste will not be accepted on Saturday, October 6th.
The City of Durango and La Plata County sponsor the collection event, with personnel and other assistance from Durango Fire & Rescue Authority. Additional support comes from numerous community partners including the Town of Bayfield and the Town of Ignacio.
