Children’s Halloween Trick-or-Treating set for Downtown Durango

Children’s Halloween Trick-or-Treating set for Downtown Durango

Merchants/BID/Chamber team up for 6th Annual event to provide safe Halloween activity

Durango, CO – A record number of Downtown Durango businesses have teamed up with the Durango Business Improvement District (BID), Southwest Sound and Durango Chamber of Commerce to provide a safe “trick-or-treat” environment for area children, hosting a “Children’s Halloween,” Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015.

Nearly 100 Downtown merchants will offer Halloween goodies and surprises between 4 and 6 p.m. for children 10-years-old and younger dressed in costumes and accompanied by an adult. New this year, Durango Fire & Rescue personnel will be in front of the Main Mall, with their fire truck, distributing glow sticks.

“This has been a tremendously successful event and we’re looking forward to another great year,” said Tim Walsworth, BID executive director. “Credit for this idea and coordination of the merchants goes to Robert Stapleton, owner of Southwest Sound. The BID and Durango Chamber are pleased to once again partner with Robert and help organize the details and underwrite the event.”

Participating merchants throughout Downtown will display bright orange pumpkins in their windows on Halloween to signal their involvement. Visit the BID web site (www.DowntownDurango.org/halloween) for a list of participating merchants.

“We encourage trick or treaters to keep an eye out for the pumpkins in the windows,” said Stapleton. “Participating merchants are located literally throughout Downtown, from Rio Grande Land, up the side streets and north to 12th St. It’s a fun challenge for the kids to ‘find’ the pumpkins in the windows.”

Wandering in and out of stores in Downtown will also remind parents of the unique and varied shopping opportunities in Durango, added Walsworth.

The Durango Business Improvement District was formed in 1997 with a goal and mission to support businesses within the District by assisting with special event marketing, providing research on topics of concern to the District (facilities, special events, best practices), planning and development of new facilities, and providing capital budget for equipment that enhances business in the District. Funding is generated by a 2 mill levy on property owners within the district, with additional marketing dollars contributed by the City of Durango and Durango Area Tourism Office.
