Upcoming DHS Events – Road to Registration for 2011-12 School Year:
Monday, January 24th:  DHS hosts ALL 8th grade students and their families at our annual “Welcome to DHS” night.   6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.  Learn what DHS has to offer your student – academics, activities, athletics – we educate the whole student.

January 25 & 26:  DHS Counselors will be at Miller to facilitate 8th grade registration.

Monday, January 31st:  Parents and students are invited to an informative meeting regarding registering your student and high school planning/course selection.  This meeting is for ALL parents/families of 8-11th graders.     6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

February 2nd:  Parent Network meeting at 4:30 p.m. in the DHS Library.  8th grade parents welcome!

February 2nd:  Coffee & Conversation with DHS Counselors – 8:15 a.m.

Durango @ Cortez Basketball Game on January 27, 2011
To attend the Durango vs. Cortez Girls and Boys Varsity Basketball Games on Thursday, January 27th, you must purchase a ticket in advance at one of the following times.There are 200 tickets available @ $5.00 each for DHS Basketball Fans.No tickets will be sold at the door the night of the game and no passes of any type will be accepted.

Tickets for Parents of DHS Basketball Varsity Players (Activities Office)
There are two (2) tickets reserved for the parents of each of the varsity players that must be purchased no later than 4:00pm on Wednesday, January 26.After that time, they will be released for sale to the general public.

Ticket sales to DHS Students, DHS Staff and the Durango Public in the DHS Activities Office – Limit 5 per family

DURANGO BIG PICTURE HIGH SCHOOL
Durango Big Picture High School is a program that focuses learning through student interests and passions.  Students will meet the same graduation requirements as all Durango School District 9-R students through project-based learning with a strong emphasis on learning through internships.  Come find out about this exciting option available to students in Durango.Durango Big Picture High School will be holding informal meetings for parents of incoming Freshman students on Thursday, January 20th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Thursday, February 10th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  The meetings will be held at Durango Big Picture High School located at 215 E. 12th Street.  Parents and students who are interested in learning more about Durango Big Picture High School are encouraged to attend one of these meetings.  For more information, please call 259-0203.

FORT LEWIS MESA ELEMENTARY
Becoming a Love and Logic Parent will be taught at Ft. Lewis Mesa by Sallie Kautter, School Counselor beginning in February. Through this class, parents will learn practical parenting and communication skills to raise responsible children. The classes will begin February 3rd and end March 3rd running each Thursday from 5:30-7:30 p.m.  The cost is $25.00 per person or $40.00 per couple; childcare and a parent workbook are included.   To sign up, please contact Sue Ullom, (970) 588-3331 by Monday, January 31, 2011.  Checks can be made payable to The Family Center.

NEEDHAM ELEMENTARY
Mrs. Wilson’s 5th graders will begin their annual quillow project on Jan. 24th.  Each student uses math skills to measure and sew a comforter with pockets for themselves and extras for families of need in the community.  Fabric donations are being accepted at the Needham office through Jan. 24th.   Fabric pieces need to measure 45″ x 96″ or larger, be 100% cotton, and not silky or heavyweight fabric.  Contact the Needham office with questions 247-4791.

PARK ELEMENTARY
Park students are helping the environment by helping Park!  Through the end of the year, students will be collecting empty printer ink cartridges and will be recycling them to earn money for Park Elementary School.  If you’d like to help out, please bring your empty ink cartridges to the Park Elementary front office.  For more information, contact Suzanne Garcia at 247-3718, ext. 3502.

RIVERVIEW ELEMENTARY
Riverview Elementary would like to congratulate the following students who received a Principal’s Pride Award in the month of December:  Valeria Castillo Venzor, Cordell Schneider, Evan Berridge, Aspen Dills, Cole Waddell, Ian Mattox, Dylan Baken, Owen Eicher, Max Reeve, Matthew Drendel, Morgan Durand, Maya Mouret and Lola Thomas.  In order to receive a Principal’s Pride Award, the students have received 10 “golden eagles” for exhibiting exceptional behavior, good manners, and work habits in school.  And, these students will be invited to have lunch with our principal, Mr. Geygan, at the end of January.  Congratulations Eagles!

Riverview Elementary would like to invite our Kindergarten parents, relatives and family friends to attend and participate in their Kindergarten child’s Music and PE classes during the week of January 24th.  The parents and friends will get to see the children in action and are welcome to participate and enjoy in the fun right along with the kids.  Please contact Mrs. Fontenot or Mr. Bartel for specific scheduling information at 247-3862. 

                           OTHER NEWS (Non-9-R, but education-related)

The Colorado Tree Coalition (CTC) and the Colorado State Forest Service proudly announce the 2011 Colorado Arbor Day Poster Contest. This exciting, fun and educational opportunity is available to all 5th grade students living in Colorado.  Prizes are awarded to both the winning student and their teacher. We will recognize the statewide 2011 Colorado Arbor Day Poster Contest winner with a ceremony at the Colorado State Capitol during Arbor Week in late April.

The theme for this year’s contest is “Celebrate Trees in Our Community”.  Only one entry per school or home school is allowed and all posters must be an original artwork created by the student. The entry deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday April 5, 2011. Submit posters in person or mail to: Keith Wood, Colorado State Forest Service, 9769 W. 119th Drive, Suite 12, Broomfield, Colorado 80021.  Additional rules and submission requirements are available at the Colorado Tree Coalition website at www.coloradotrees.org.  All posters submitted are the property of the Colorado Tree Coalition and will not be returned.  Teachers and students are encouraged to visit the Colorado Project Learning Tree website at www.coloradoplt.org for educational activities and creative ideas to link the poster contest with environmental learning opportunities.  At this site you can also learn more about the United Nations 2011 International Year of the Forest.

Adams State College Extended Studies has partnered with Virtual Education Software to provide continuing education for teachers online or via CD-Rom.These self-paced courses provide interactive instruction on strategies for teaching students with special behavioral and learning needs and are easy to use online or via CD-Rom. Courses are offered for Graduate Credit.

The public is invited to the Animas High School 10th Grade Exhibition on January 20th from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at AHS.There will be two topics, Belgian imperialism in the Congo and the Rwandan Genocide.
