THE BOARD OF EDUCATION
Welcome to 9-R’s newly seated Board Members — Andy Burns (District C), Julia Levy (District D), Joe Colgan (District E), and Jeff Schell (District F)! The next Board Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at 5:30 p.m.

The committee for the Strategic Plan Strategy #1 is in need of four or five individuals to help create protocols for communication throughout the 9-R district. The meetings will be held on Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. — 6:00 p.m., for approximately 6 weeks. Please contact Kristine Lawson in the Human Resources Department if you are interested in joining the Strategic Plan Strategy #1 Committee.

The Districtâ€TMs insurance customer service representative Jim Hermann, with CEBT, will be available to answer questions at the District Office on Tuesday, November 17th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This is for the medical, dental and vision coverage. Free feel to drop by or you may contact Jim through Steve Miller in the Finance Office at 247-5411 x1432.

DURANGO HIGH SCHOOL
On Monday, November 16th, there will be a mandatory meeting for all winter athletes, parents, and coaches in the main gym. The general session will begin at 7:00 p.m. and the specific sports sessions will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the following locations: Boys Basketball – Gym 1, Girls Basketball – Gym 2, Wrestling – Wrestling Room and Girls Swimming in the Cafeteria.
If you attended the Fall Sports Meeting you DO NOT have to attend the General session, but MUST attend the specific sport session beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the above locations.

ESCALANTE MIDDLE SCHOOL
On Thursday, November 19th, at 8:30am the School Advisory Committee will be meeting at Escalante Middle School. All interested parents and community members are invited to attend. This month we will be reviewing NWEA assessments.
The H1N1 vaccination clinic is scheduled for Wednesday, November 18 from 8:00-12:00 at Escalante Middle School. Parents must complete written permission for the vaccination.
MILLER MIDDLE SCHOOL
Miller Middle School would like to give a big THANK YOU to its students, parents and the Durango community for another successful fund raiser.The school raised over $33,000. Thanks also to Durango Mountain Resort, D&SNGRR, The Fish Connection, Four Corners Whitewater, The Boarding Haus, The Seikman Family, Fuzziwig’s and Gardenswartz for donating prizes for students and teachers. And thanks to Darsi Olson, CMT, for rewarding teachers with massages for their hard work.

Miller’s 6th, 7th & 8th grade choirs will perform November 18 at 7:00 pm in the Miller Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public. Under the direction of Kim Farrell, the choirs will perform pieces focusing on the subjects of peace and winter.

Miller Parent Action Committee will hold its monthly meeting at 8:15 am in room 172 on Thursday November 19. Coffee and donuts will be provided.

Miller Parents are invited to join their students for a Traditional Thanksgiving Feast on Thursday, November 19, during lunch. Regular lunch periods will be modified as follows to accommodate the meal.

NEEDHAM ELEMENTARY
The Colorado School Counselor Association has announced that Needham Elementary School Counselor, Carla Mulkey, has been recognized as the “Colorado Elementary School Counselor of the Year.†This award will be presented at the Associationâ€TMs annual conference in Denver on Nov. 19, 2009.Carla was nominated and supported in this recognition by a number of colleagues at Needham, from around the Durango 9-R School, and from the wider southwest Colorado region.Congratulations, Carla! There will be a “Chili Chompin’ Cancer Stompin’ Fundraiser” for Tammy Osborn, who used to be a 9-R special education teacher at Miller Middle School, on Sunday, November 15, 2009, from noon – 3:00p.m. at the Three Springs Information Center. $10/adults; $5/children 6-12; FREE/children 5 and under. Silent Auction. Fun for the family, including bouncy castle, face painitng and games.
